Fabric Guide

Broderie Anglaise White cotton fabric with embroidered patterns or cutwork design.
Calico Plain woven inexpensive cotton that comes bleached or unbleached.
Canvas

Strong and heavyweight cotton fabric that usually has a soft finish. Often available in smart stripes. Very hard wearing and durable.

Chintz Glazed cotton that repels dust and dirt. This glazed finish will wear off with repeated washing.
Cotton Pique The way this is produced on a dobby loom usually results in a fabric with small geometric patterns.
Cretonne A medium weight cotton fabric with a matt finish.
Damask Jacquard weave cotton where the pattern shows in reverse on the wrong side.
Denim Twill weave fabric that is very hard wearing usually made with blue and white yarns.
Drill Strong twill weave cotton in plain or patterned versions.
Felt Bonded, non woven fabric that can be cut in any direction without fraying.
Gingham Lightweight cotton fabric woven into checks of white and colored yarns.
Heavy Duty Cotton Unevenly woven fabric that mixes well with other fabrics.
Hessian A hemp and jute mix fabric.
Hopsack A loosely woven rough fabric but hard wearing.
Indian Cotton 100% cotton, woven with uneven threads to create a slub appearance.
Lawn A very fine and almost translucent plain weave cotton fabric.
Linen Union By mixing linen with cotton and man made fabrics a softer texture is achieved.
Monk's Cloth A heavyweight cotton fabric with a basket weave. Tends to snag easily.
Satin Cotton Cotton fabric with a slight sheen on the right side.
Seersucker By pulling the warp threads tighter when weaving gives an unusual crinkled effect.
Sheeting Cotton or cotton/polyester fabric that is woven extra wide. Available in a range of colours.
Ticking Very strong twill woven cotton usually in a striped design.
Toile de Jouy A glazed cotton printed with a traditional scene in one colour.
Velour A soft closely woven fabric with a thick short pile.
Velvet Rich looking cotton fabric with an even pile. Comes in a good range of colours.
